FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Phoenix Club of Nashville Invests $10,000 Grant Supporting STARS Counselor Staff Funding

Nashville, Tenn., December 14, 2021 – The Phoenix Club of Nashville (PCON)is proud to announce a $10,000 grant to STARS to support critical funding needs for a new clinical supervisor position serving STARS counselors at Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS). As STARS increases its school-based clinical staff in the coming academic year, these funds will allow the organization to provide high quality, evidence-based mental health, social, and emotional support to Nashville’s students in need.

“STARS is absolutely thrilled to partner with the Phoenix Club of Nashville,” said CEO Roger Dinwiddie. “Being able to leverage the philanthropic commitment of PCON to support the hope, health, and connection of young people living in Davidson County is a tremendous honor.  Thank you for believing in STARS.”

STARS estimates they will have at least 60 counselors seeking clinical supervision during the 2021-2022 academic year. Clinical supervision for counselors seeking licensure ensures all students receive effective, research-backed support from STARS. Licensure in the State of Tennessee as either a Licensed Advanced Practice Social Worker (LAPSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) requires 3,000 hours of supervised work experience. By offering clinical supervision to all STARS counselors, STARS is enhancing the services it provides to students, investing in the growth of its staff, and providing the Nashville area with top talent who have direct exposure to the children who need this support the most.

“STARS’ programs that serve at-risk youth in the Metro Nashville Public School system strike at the heart of the Phoenix Club’s mission,” said Phoenix Club of Nashville President Patrick Baird. “These funds will support students who need the attention and care of hard working, dedicated STARS staff, and who will benefit from these programs long after their interactions with the counselors.”

In 2020-2021, STARS served students in 60 schools across 7 Middle Tennessee counties, reaching a total of 60,983 students, as well as selected/indicated services to 3,878 students referred to the program for identified barriers to learning. Based on counselor-reported data across schools for the 2020-2021, school year, STARS counselors:

  • Led 223 classroom, assembly, and community prevention presentations reaching over 60,000 students
  • Conducted 16,548 individual counseling sessions, and 1,465 group counseling sessions
  • Served 3,356 incidents (students seen by the STARS Counselor once)
  • Attended to 369 critical incidents, which are situations in which the presenting issue is severe enough to warrant calling parents, informing principals, contacting DCS, initiating suicide protocol, etc. (Any allegation of abuse or assault, suicidal/homicidal ideation, self-harming behavior, severe mental health crisis, etc. would fall into this category.)
  • Directly reached a total of 7,234 individual students.
